Excerpt from Cotton Situation: November 1973
The 1973 cotton crop of million bales (as estimated October 1) is down from million last year. Yield prospects have improved since August 1, but harvested acreage is 5% below 1972. Spring flooding reduced Delta acreage a fifth. The indicated national yield now is 509 pounds per acre, up slightly from last year.
Problems in the Delta indicate smaller u.s. Output of cotton stapling 1-1/ 16 inches and longer this year. Meanwhile, shorter staple production will be up significantly in the Southwest and there are indications of a good quality crop in West Texas. The longer staples’ share of us. Production probably will be down from last year’s And with relatively small beginning stocks, supplies of the longer staples will be much tighter during 1973/ 74.
