The neighbourhood of Holborn has long been one of the chief law quarters of London. Staple Inn, Barnard’s Inn, Furnival’s Inn, and Thavies Inn are all in the vicinity of Holborn, and one Of the four great Inns, the subject of this volume, is adjacent to that thoroughfare itself. Some idea Of the neighbourhood in the time of Elizabeth may be Obtained by reference to the old map attributed to Ralph Agas. Holborn there ap pears as an open country road, commanding a northward view of the Hampstead and Highgate Hills, and of the little lonely, almost forsaken, church of St. Pancras midway. A few houses and shops near Holborn Bars, and the gardens and buildings of Gray’s Inn, are indicated, to gether with Gray’s Inn Lane, the houses in which thoroughfare then extended no further than what may be called the postern of the Inn.
