Excerpt from Memorials of a Ministry: A Selection From the Discourses of Edward a Thomson
These discourses represent the staple of Mr Thomson’s preaching. They are printed almost exactly as they left his own pen. They are not Sermons prepared for special occasions, but are specimens of his ordinary pulpit work. From a large number equally suitable for publication these have been selected on a principle approved by himself, viz., that of presenting the treat ment by him for Christian edification of a variety of topics. Their preparation in the shape in which they now appear occupied some of his later labours, even after he had ceased to preach. When preached, as all of them had been, their delivery was always accom panied by an earnest desire for spiritual fruit, and they are now committed to the press in the confidence that they will still continue to commend that Gospel of the Grace of God which their author so faithfully and lovingly proclaimed.
