The geographical position of Baltimore with respect to the natural channels of trade west of the Alleghany mountains, and especially its proximity to the Ohio river, compared with that of any other Atlantic city, could not fail to attract the attention of the projectors of the Rail-road. This circumstance proba bly had more influence than any other consideration, m estab liebing the confidence of the public, 1n the feasibility of the pro jcet, and in eliciting their friendly, and even zealous support of the measures that were taken in furtherance of its adoption.
