Excerpt from Notes on Political Economy as Applicable to the United States
These Notes on Political Economy, as applicable to the United States, were written within the last two years, partly to give expression to thoughts that occurred to the author, and partly to occupy and amuse his leisure moments. Friends advised their publication, and they are now given, for what they are worth, to the public. The author hopes that they may be read with care, and without pre judice, their suggestions improved upon, and that they may lead to some good results. The whole United States will find their attention directed, both in principle and detail, to a subject that em braces all interests; and the Southern States par ticularly, with which the author stands identified, by birth and interest, are requested to read these Notes in reference to their staple productions, wants, and operations. Whatever defects may be found in the work, the author hopes to get credit for good intentions.
