TH E’ minif’ter of the prefent age, being defiitute of chril’tian piety, is neither able to preach; nor clearly to comprehend, the truths of the Gofpel. In general, he contents him felf with fuperficially declaring certain attri butes of the, Supreme Being; while heiis fearful of {peaking too largely bf grace or its operations, lel’che {hould be fufpe ted of enthufiafm. He declaims againf’t fome enor’ mous vice, or difplays the beauty of fome focial Virtue. He afie ts to ef’tablifh the doc trines of heathen fphilofophers: and it were to be wilhed, that he always carried his morality was high a pitch, as fome of the mol’t cele brared of thofe (ages. If he ever proclaims’ the Lord Jefas Chrif’t, it is but in a curfory way, and chiefly when he is obliged to it.
