In presenting this little work to the Public, the author has endeavored to give an answer to questions, which have been constantly asked by visitors to the Fort, concerning its extent, area, armament, and a hundred different points, which we have endeavored to elucidate.

We are indebted to several sources for our information, to all of whom we are grateful, but we Wish particularly to ex press our appreciation of the valuable information concern ing, The _national Soldiers’ Home, Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, and Hampton, gleaned from the Guide Book compiled by C. W. Betts, Esq., the gentlemanly and accommodating Manager of the Normal School Press. To him, and one other source, Lieut. Col. John H. Craven, U. S. A., the Medical attendant of Jefferson Davis, we would especially return thanks.

We send this book forth to the public, ’ and bespeak for it a generous patronage. Should we succeed in satisfying the want it is intended to supply, its author’s object will have been accomplished.
